| Golf as a Fitness Sport Golf can be a good source of fitness. Studies have shown that walking on a regular basis can improve cholesterol levels, decrease body weight, lower blood pressure and decrease the incidence of bone and joint problems. Since many golfers regularly walk 12 – 16 hours per week during their rounds, it is reasonable for them to expect these kinds of benefits. In addition the average male golfer burns about 900 calories per round while females burn about 700 calories, provided they walk. Carrying clubs adds about another 10 – 15% to these numbers. ![]() All in all golf is a good source of exercise and provides an ideal way for us to keep fit. Perhaps because of this, seniors are embracing the game in ever increasing numbers. Even though they make up only 25% of the golf population, they are playing more than 50% of the total number of rounds. Beyond enjoying the physical benefits, they also get to stay socially connected and involved through their golf contacts. “Maturity” brings with it various aches and pains, plus a gradual decrease in strength, flexibility and balance. The good news here is there are ways to compensate. First of all, a program of regular exercise can go a long way to minimize these changes, while specific regimes can be tailored to individual needs. Secondly, before playing, always warm-up and stretch your muscles. If you can, head to the range and hit a few balls before teeing off. How you get around the course is important. As mentioned, carry your golf bag increases your exercise benefits but may not be a good idea if you have low back, hip, knee, or ankle problems. If you do carry, use a light-weight bag, lighten the load by getting rid of extra clubs and use a double strap. Even using a pull cart may not be realistic for everyone, since it can stress the shoulder, elbows, wrists and low back. A good compromise is the use of a remote controlled electric cart. People with heart or respiratory conditions can play by riding a cart and getting off to walk when appropriate.
